Karsh : Portrait Photographer
If there is a single quality that is shared by all great men, it is vanity. But I mean by “vanity” only that they appreciate their own worth. Without this kind of vanity they would not be great. And with vanity alone, of course, a man is nothing.
Yousef Karsh
Yousef Karsh (1908-2002) was a master of the formally posed, carefully lighted studio portrait.
He was born in Mardin, Armenia, but he left his native country in1922. At first he wanted to be a physician, but the lack of money decided of his fate otherwise. He was sent to Boston to study art.
The Boston portrait photographer John H. “Jack” Garo, is best known as the teacher and mentor of Yousef Karsh (John H. “Jack” Garo Special Issue of The Camera 1915)
Karsh specialized in portraits of influencial figures.
