Philip Glass : ” It’s a piece about bad government, and how bad government destroys society and culture”

Apthorp : So who are the Barbarians?

Glass: The Barbarians are the ones who act against civilization, who act against society, who are proponents of state terror and state abuse. We never actually see them. Waiting for the Barbarians is, of course, waiting for ourselves.

Apthorp : And the Empire?

Glass : It could be almost any modern state. In the second act, the prosecutor comes to the border to investigate an uprising. In fact there isn’t any uprising, and no one living on the border except some fishermen. So they create a war, for reasons of their own. And at one point, this character says, “Of course, we don’t approve of torture, but in an emergency situation, everybody understands that it’s allowed.”

We hear people in the American government saying exactly this kind of thing. It’s a piece about bad government, and how bad government destroys society and culture.

Opera dealing with civil rights

“Examining state-sponsored torture and repression, the opera explores the way in which modern-day white society is coming to terms with its legacy of centuries of repression of indigenous black cultures”.

The “Barbarians” of the title are nomadic people deemed by the “civilised” whites to be socially and racially inferior.

Glass previously said he saw the opera as a critique of President Bush’s administration and its war against Iraq. ”

Abu Ghraib

“Staged by Guy Montavon with Dennis Russell Davies as musical director, the production borrows heavily from the media photos of Abu Ghraib that shocked the world: prisoners are hooded, leashed and stripped to the waist. It’s an effective device: The images revive the sense of revulsion provoked by Abu Ghraib, at the same time bringing the opera right into the present day.”
