It’s about destiny

Take a look to these two young boys. The one posing for the photographer Tracey Moffat, and the french actor Stephane Rideau in André Techiné’s film “Wild Reeds” (1994). Don’t they seem alikes ? By nature, both are probably very different, and they are unlikely to know each other.

Both have a loose tie close to the neck, which could be viewed as the symbolic expression of an uncompromising reluctancy to conform the official etiquette. A victorian high-necked lace collar was fashionable in a society where elegance reflected moral rigidity. By contrast, these boys are openly defying the “uptight” generation.

However, one can easily imagine that it is unsure where the resemblance ends. Both seem to share the same fragile and stubborn attitude. They are scarred for life.

“Tracey Moffat, Donald Rodney, and Jason Evans and Simon Foxton portray key personal issues such as childhood experience and trauma; our sense of identity and its relationship to class, race and gender; power and freedom of expression.”

First Love, With No Girls Around by CARYN JAMES October 7, 1994, Friday

“In the film’s most vivid scene, Francois decides to go to the owner of the local shoe store, a man he has heard is a homosexual, too. With touching naivete, he decides to ask the man for advice. “It’s not about my shoes,” he tells the bewildered stranger. “It’s about my destiny.”
