Montri Toemsombat : the politics of clothing
Montri Toemsombat Corrupt Me
“Art enables me to survive and grow at a time when I need all the inspiration possible to keep going. I’m still young and fairly naïve, but the speed at which the globe moves today leaves me increasingly tense. Presently, I can only view the world with vague clouded visions.”

- Montri Toemsombat was invited to Melbourne as part of the Visual Art component of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (Australia). For this project he developed a rice monk’s robe, site-specific installation in Project Space / Spare Room. The exhibition, titled ‘New Fashion Order’ referred to the Buddhist notion of a transitory world or reality, particularly in fashion.
“In his rice project, Thai artist Montri Toemsombat is meditating on the world of fashion and consumerism by growing 300 grams of natural rice on the robes of a Buddhist monk, surrounded by a saffron landscape covering the walls and the floor of the gallery”.Sunday Morning with Rhiannon Brown and Debra McCoy Sunday 13/03/2005

Rama IX Art Museum “The website of Thai contemporary and modern art” :
- “Better know as a performance artist, Montri Toemsombat has created an episodic storyboard, detailing a journey he made upcountry to transplant a young tree from Bangkok to his native province of Chaiyaphum. Printed in an over-exposed film format, the series ends with the poignant image of a healthy tree being planted in a parched expanse of cracked mud. What Montri so ably conveys in his contribution is an unexpected sense of finding and arresting time and place” Bangkok Post, 21 July 2005 [back]
