The Day of Gypsies in Andalucia

(…) After a wonderful dinner and much to drink, Diego tuned-up my guitar and the fiesta was on. It was not one of those all-time great fiestas, but it was intimate and everyone was a gusto. By 2:00AM, in the warm shadows of candle-light, most of us were exhausted and asleep in our chairs or almost there. Diego was playing por bulerías, a fast, driving form, and his friend started to sing. Up until that point, I didn’t know that he could sing. And as he sang, something quite extraordinary began to happen. It was as if he had, at that moment, tapped into some powerful, profound source of flamenco energy. It was clear that he was singing way beyond his normal ability. Diego picked up on this immediately and played to it, driving him further on. We all began to awaken to this thing that was happening. I remember seeing Anzonini lifting his head out of his arms where it had rested, in sleep, on the table — his body rising dream-like, but electrified, from the chair, empowered by the music and filled with the rhythm. He rises slowly, deliberately, and moves in perfect rhythm, moves a compás, not dancing per se, but focused and intense, as the singer sings and Diego plays and the exploding rhythm takes us all into some other dimension. The cante builds with such strength and passion, that Anzonini appears to be drawn up from his table into the center of the room, like a genie called from its bottle. His eyes are wide and blazing blue and he’s plugged into the same energy that possesses us all. He tosses a gesture here, a glance there, and it is clear that he is compás — he is it, the very heart and soul of the Gypsies. As the singer finishes his cante, and Diego quiets the strings, we are all incredulous and spent.
