The Eastern dance, in Arabic “El raqs el sharki”, is a splendid spectacle of light and spangles, a mixture of grace and sensuality, movements subtle in communion with the melody envoûtante of the music and the rate/rhythm involving of counted, the tambourine and the aoud. 2

“Belly dancing was introduced to Egypt by ghawazi. Their tribe was later joined by awalim, who danced veiled or for a female audience in the 1800s. Egyptian dancers then began to perform in clubs in Paris, New York, London and in Cairo’s Western-style cabarets. By 1920 belly dancing had become an essential part of traditional Egyptian weddings. During the 1940s dancers developed styles of dancing that were included in most film productions. Dancers today such as Fifi Abdou, Dina and Lucy adopted these routines, modified them and turned them into solo performancesw.”

De Bamba Kachar 5 à Samia Gamal (célèbres danseuses), le monde s’est laissé envoûter par l’élégance du geste et la souplesse du corps des danseuses orientales.

“Qu’est-ce qui a pu si profondement fasciner ou irriter les occidentaux dans la danse orientale ? L’impudeur ? Croyez-vous, alors que le ballet classique laissait deviner en des écarts fort audacieux les charmes les plus des trop jolies danseuses …. et que nul ne songeait à crier au scandale. L’impudeur, certes non. Bien plutôt la tension, l’accumulation d’énergie, la montée de la fièvre, de l’excitation jusqu’à un point intolérable pour le bon goût.”

  1. “Samia Gamal was a girl of High Egypt, born in 1924 of the name of Zeinab Ibrahim Mahfouz. When its family emigrated in Cairo very close to Khan El Khalili, it met there Badia Massabni, a woman of Syro-Lebanese origin which held a cabaret with Gizeh in Cairo. She had engaged it in her troop and Samia Gamal like name of scene had chosen to him, a name which suited him to wonder because the word “gamal” means Arabic beauty. Samia Gamal incarnait the beauty indeed, the charm and pleasure, it became not only one famous dancer but also a large actress of cinema. She introduced the fast rate of the Western music which she appreciated much, in the Eastern dance, and was a brilliant innovative choreographer. Preferred dancer of king Farouk, this one allotted to him the title of “first national dancer of Egypt”. With the screen, Samia Gamal formed with Farid El Atrache a couple indissociable and mythical, they interpreted several musicals together. I chose you an extract of the film “Afrita Haneim” which means “Madam the she-devil” where it plays the role of an outgoing genius of a magic oil lamp for exaucer the wishes of Farid El Atrache. Samia Gamal continued to dance until the age of 70ans and died on December 1, 1994.” [back]

  3. Edouard Frederic Wilhelm Richter was born in Paris in 1844. The son of a Dutch lady, he began his studies at the Hague Academy of Fine Art, before entering the Beaux-Arts School in Paris as a student of Hebert and Bonnat. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1866. He later became a full member of the Society of the Salon of French Artists receiving an honorable mention in 1881, a third-place medal in 1901 and a second place medal in 1902.
