“Len Lye est né Leonard Charles Huia Lye en 1901 à Christ Church en Nouvelle-Zélande. Saisi très tôt par une double ambition, créer un art totalement personnel et créer un art du mouvement, il ne cesse d’écrire poèmes, lettres et textes sur le cinéma fondés sur la problématique de l’empathie, de peindre, de sculpter (sculptures dynamiques figurant parmi les sculptures mobiles) et de cinématographier. Il réalise en 50 ans une trentaine de films composés de documentaires et de films d’expérimentation. C’est dans ces derniers qu’il explore plusieurs directions: l’animation de dessins dans son premier film “Tusalava”, le “direct cinéma” ou “direct film” (réalisé sans caméra) par grattage de la pellicule comme dans “Free radicals”, par application directe de la peinture comme dans “Color cry”. Len Lye s’intéresse très tôt aux différents procédés chromatiques: le Gasparcolor, utilisé notamment dans “Rainbow dance”, le Dufaycolor et le Technicolor.”

Swing Kids : the Lambeth Walk

The “Lambeth-Walk” (a British dance tune and dance popularized in America by Arthur Murray in 1938, taken from the London play “Me and My Girl”; the dance is described as a “walking dance done in a jaunty, swaggering, strutting, knee slapping style”); nobody thought anything of it. 1

Song based on ”Lambeth walk” (as Churchills favorite song it was at the top of the Forbidden Song List) in Nazi Germany :

“Kennen Sie Lamberts Nachtlokal?
Nackte Weiber kolossal
Eine Mark und zehn, liegen oder stehn!”

Translation:
”Do you know Lambert’s Night Bar?
Naked women tremendous
One Mark and ten, lie or stand up straight!”

The film was made without a camera by painting directly onto the celluloid.

Len Lye used Dufaycolor for his short films Kaleidoscope (1935), A Colour Box (1935), and Swinging the Lambeth Walk (1940).
