China under construction : mainland terrain for artistic exploration

En 2006, l’artiste chinoise Cui XIUWEN se faisait remarquer en exposant une série intitulée “Anges” mettant en scène une femme enceinte qu’elle confrontrait à la modernisation de la Chine. La métaphore de la gestation d’une nouvelle superpuissance semblait ici s’imposer comme une évidence. La nouvelle génération des artistes chinois nés dans les années 70 a délaissé la réinterprétation moderniste des canons de l’esthétique révolutionnaire pour se concentrer sur l’aspect social et humain d’une modernisation à marche forcée dont le prix humain est élevé.

La destruction des quartiers traditionnels rasés pour construire des édifices modernes, la relégation des pauvres à la périphérie de Pékin, la libéralisation des moeurs sexuelles dans un pays dont les valeurs traditionnelles restent imprégnées par le confucianisme, l’envie effrénée de consommation, le règne de l’argent dans un monde globalisé sont autant de thèmes qu’on retrouve dans une production artistique chinoise qui est désormais intégrée au circuit du commerce international de l’art, ce qui lui confère une visibilité porteuse de réels opportunités pour les artistes en quête de reconnaissance, mais qui impose aussi ses règles, et parfois, son marketing.

Les artistes chinois témoignent, interrogent, critiquent, pointent sans complaisances les dérives d’un pouvoir qui parfois oublie le peuple au nom duquel il gouverne. Ils soulignent les tensions qui traversent une société chinoise tiraillée entre ses traditions confucianistes et une modernisation à tout crin oublieuse des valeurs 1.

Cui Xiuwen est née en 1967 à Harbin dans une famille de musiciens, et vit aujourd’hui à Pékin. La France l’a découverte au Fresnoy en 2002 avec Lady’s Video : une caméra cachée filme les prostituées dans les toilettes du plus grand club de Pékin. 3

Au Festival de photographie contemporaine de Lianzhou en décembre 2006, elle a imposé sa vision d’avenir avec la série « Angel ».

« Je me suis servie de ce modèle comme d’un conteneur de mes idées, mes rêves et mes questions. Elle incarne le futur de la Chine comme mon propre avenir, dit-elle. Quand j’étudiais les beaux-arts, mon professeur me disait :»Si vous voulez avoir du succès, choisissez un artiste et plongez-vous dans son monde. J’ai choisi Beckman et j’ai peint d’abord à l’huile comme lui. » (Love, 1998.)

Chinese contemporary art has reached a turning point and the artists in China Under Construction are at the forefront of the new trajectory. In the early and mid-1990s, easily digestible, foreigner-pleasing formulas from China, such as Political Pop and Cynical Realism, captured the international art community’s imagination. This first generation of works played on well-known Cultural Revolution imagery, popular political symbols, and representations of social disaffectation and alienation that fed easily into Western narratives about a China in transition embraced by the mainstream foreign media. By the late 90s, however, growing numbers of Chinese artists, many born in the 70s, were unwilling to manipulate this new discourse of power in order to follow the previous generation’s path to easy success. Their formative experiences centered less around the Cultural Revolution imagery and more on the new processes of social and economic transformation unleashed by Reform and Opening (initiated in ’78). Images of a country attempting to carry out unprecedented and rapid economic “modernization” have overtaken the old creative canons, bringing a more diverse generation of new Chinese contemporary art to the international stage. As rapid urbanization and globalization throw China into a state of post-modern flux, the experiences of the new era are more fragmented and diverse than ever before and the most relevant and progressive art coming out of China reflects and comments upon that diversity in ways that illuminate the human condition for us all. 6

China power station II

China Power Station II (centrale thermique britannique désaffectée devenue musée en plein air). Artistes chinois : The artists in the exhibition are Cao Fei, Chen Qiulin, Chu Yun, Duan Jianyu, Hu Xiangqian, Ji Weiyu, Kan Xuan, Liang Yue, Liu Chuang, Liu Ding, Liu Wei, Liu Weijian, Lu Chunsheng, Ou Ning, Pak Sheung Chuen, Qiu Anxiong, Song Tao, Sun Xun, Xu Zhen, Xue Tao, Yang Fudong, Zhang Ding, Zhou Tao and Zhou Zixi.

Part I in London marks the first phase of the project. Part II has been developed for Oslo in 2007 and Part III for Beijing in 2008. The project will propose a new model for showcasing developments in Chinese art and architecture and will be updated annually from 2006 to 2008.

One goal of China Power Station: Part II, is to shed light on these struggles and to uncover some of the most innovative responses that are currently being generated in relation to this territory that provides such a rich terrain for artistic exploration. (teknemedia.net)
