Frozen river

FROZEN RIVER was originally Courtney Hunt’s second short film. It premiered in the New York Film Festival in September, 2004.

The original script was selected as one of six finalists in IFP New York’s emerging Narrative Feature Script Section in 2005. It was also included in the Los Angeles Film Festival’s “Fast Track” Program in 2006. Shot in sub-zero weather in Plattsburgh, New York, in March of 2007, on Lake Champlain and surrounding areas, Frozen River stars Melissa Leo, Misty Upham, Charlie McDermott, Jr., Michael O’Keefe, and Mark Boone, Jr.

The feature version won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

Synopsis

Two days before Christmas in rural upstate New York, Ray Eddy’s husband has left her in an impossible situation—not only is he gone, but he has gambled away all of the family’s meager savings. Ray’s single wage at the Yankee One Dollar Store can’t make the house payment, and the situation forces Ray to feed her two sons popcorn and Tang every day. When Ray strikes out to search for her husband, she encounters Lila Littlewolf, a tough, street-smart Mohawk woman who is dealing with her own struggle to make ends meet. But Lila has found a way to do it—smuggling illegal immigrants into the States. The tribal elders disapprove and attempt to stop Lila by forbidding anyone to sell her a car. Ray has a car, and although the two women don’t trust each other, they team up and share Ray’s Dodge Spirit to make a run across the frozen St. Lawrence River.

Biography

Courtney Hunt
Frozen River is Courtney’s feature directorial debut. Courtney is a graduate of the Columbia Film School (MFA). Her thesis film, Althea Faught, a short about the American civil war which she wrote and directed, was purchased by PBS and aired on American Playhouse. Courtney Hunt also holds a law degree from Northeastern University, where she studied civil rights and constitutional law, and a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College. 1

“Le but de Ray est de s’offrir la maison de ses rêves : un mobil home avec trois chambres, une salle de bains et le chauffage. Pour l’instant, il gèle à moins 30 dans cette petite ville américaine près du Canada et Ray survit avec ses deux enfants de 15 et 5 ans alors que son abruti de mari est parti jouer ses économies à Atlantic City. Elle croise la route de Lila, une jeune femme d’origine Mohawk à qui on a retiré son bébé et qui l’embarque malgré elle dans un trafic d’immigrés clandestins. Au début réticente, Ray finit par comprendre que cet argent gagné illégalement n’est pas la meilleure, mais la seule solution pour sauver sa famille.” 3
